The City of Charlevoix Electric System serves about 4,500 customers in the City and surrounding townships including parts of Charlevoix, Eveline, Hayes, and Marion Townships. The system consists of two substations with roughly 2,000 power poles and well over 100 miles of electric wires. The City owns:
A small portion of the Belle River Coal Plant with Detroit Edison
A small portion of the Campbell Coal Plant with Consumers Energy
A small portion of a Combined Cycle Natural Gas Plant in Ohio
A small portion of a Natural Gas Turbine Plant in Kalkaska
Portions of various landfill gas plants, a wind farm and solar facilities
The City gets its remaining power from various forward purchases and daily purchases off the market. All of our purchases are through the Michigan Public Power Agency in Lansing.
