The City Clerk is elected every two years during the odd year City elections. The City Clerk is not a voting member of City Council.
Voter Registration
The Clerk Maintains the voter registration files, which includes but is not limited to:
Election Administration
The Clerk Administers all elections in City of Charlevoix. The Clerk plans, organizes, and oversees election activities including but not limited to:

Processing of absentee ballots

Preparing voting devices, ballot boxes, etc.

Training Election Inspectors

Issuing, validating, and certifying petitions for local candidates and issues

Relocation of precinct boundaries
Records Management
The Clerk is the official custodian of City records, books, and documents such as oaths, contracts, ordinances, and resolutions. The Clerk’s office is also responsible for producing and keeping minutes for City Council and the Board of Review. The Clerk’s office also maintains records for other boards, such as the Planning Commission, Downtown Development Authority, Zoning Board of Appeals, Shade Tree Commission, among others.
The Clerk’s Office maintains records in accordance with the State of Michigan Record Retention Schedule. The Clerk’s Office also publishes and posts legal notices.
Cemetery Administration
The Clerk’s office is responsible for the administrative operations of the City cemeteries, which includes:
FOIA Coordinator
The Clerk is the official coordinator of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. All requests are processed through the Clerk's office, regardless of which department may gather the information.
Submit a Freedom of Information (FOIA) request
The City Clerk’s office is responsible for completing FOIA requests. Any questions can be addressed to 231-547-3250. You can also Fill out this form and submit the completed form to the City Clerks office. Completed forms should be hand delivered or mailed to Clerks Office at 210 State Street. The forms can also be faxed to 231-237-0329. Please note there may be costs associated with completing your FOIA requests.
Licenses and Mass Gathering Permits
The Clerk's Office processes various licenses and permits such as Transient Sales Licenses, Solicitation Licenses, Liquor Licenses, Mass Gathering Permits, Fireworks Permits, and Licenses for Going Out of Business Sales.
