Airport General Information.
The Charlevoix Municipal Airport is located in the northwestern Lower Peninsula of Michigan and is owned by the City of Charlevoix. The current airport location (approximately ½ mile southwest of beautiful downtown Charlevoix) was established in the early-to-mid 1950’s (see Historic Photo below) and has had many upgrades and improvements over the years (see 2009 Photo below).
The City of Charlevoix assumed direct operation and staffing on April 1, 2011. The Charlevoix Municipal Airport is a dynamic place to visit and work offering both general aviation and commercial services. The airport has a strong component of business and leisure jet traffic as well as two charter services serving Beaver Island. The charter companies log over 15,000 enplanements each year qualifying the airport for up to $1 million in annual FAA grant funding. Grant funding has been earmarked for taxiway, runway and apron improvements to be completed in 2013. The City has also completed initial plans for a terminal expansion/renovation project that will be undertaken contingent upon FAA funding.
The Airport is located on 205 acres. The terminal has 3300 usable square feet, 53 aircraft ramping positions, 416 public automobile parking spaces and four automobile rental spaces (summer season only). The terminal building is located on the south side of the airport off US 31 and includes public waiting areas, a pilot’s lounge, restrooms, administrative offices, and offices for one of the two charter based operators. The terminal also provides free WIFI and internet service. Vending services are offered. The airport also has ample public parking that is plowed, lighted, and maintained by the City. The Fiscal year 2012/13 Airport operating budget is $2.4 million. There are five year-round Airport employees with six additional employees hired for the busy summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day).
CVX features a paved, 4550’ x 75’ runway (RWY 9/27) along with a seasonal turf runway (RWY 4/23). The paved runway is plowed in the winter and has a dual-wheel, weight bearing capacity of 30,000#lbs. The airport has medium intensity runway and taxiway lighting with instrument approaches. The CTAF/Unicom frequency is 122.8 with an Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) frequency of 122.0. This information is also available by calling 231-237-9703. CVX has a primary airport designation and can handle anything from helicopters and single-engine aircraft up to large twin-engine and jet aircraft.
Charlevoix Municipal Airport is an Avfuel branded airport offering 100ll and Jeta fuels. Customers can rest assured that City staff has been completely trained on fuel quality assurance. The Airport also offers Avpoints and contract fuel options for commercial pilots.
